SHOCKING NEWS: Alpha Protocol won't be getting a sequel

Sega West big-wig Mike Hayes has gone on record today with a revelation that will shock… absolutely nobody; an Alpha Protocol sequel will never see the light of day.

Chatting CVG today, Hayes stated that, although he was happy with the concepts Obsidian’s spy based RPG, the game simply didn’t sell enough to warrant a sequel.

Surprised? No, me neither.

“Let’s speak very commercially; the game hasn’t sold what we’ve expected, therefore we won’t be doing a sequel,” he said. “The concept was brilliant, though. You know this whole thing with Metacritic where you have to be in the high 70s to mid-80s minimum [to have any success] – well, with RPGs you have got to be in the late 80s.”

Obsidian is currently hard at work on Dungeon Siege III for Square Enix. Here’s hoping these fair a little better.

Sequel O’Clock: Infamous 2, Red Faction: Armageddon

Posted by Herman S. Lilleng On June - 5 - 2010

It’s that magical time of year again, kids. E3 is but a week away, and that means announcements and rumours of hot new titles. Today we learned about two follow-ups to some of 2009s most acclaimed titles.

Game Informer have revealed their latest cover, and lo and behold, it’s Cole from Infamous, sporting a new look. Infamous 2 will build upon what the predecessor did right, sporting new powers, and a whole new city to traverse seamlessly.

Another successful open world game released last summer was the surprise hit Red Faction: Guerilla. A lot of the games’ appeal was attributed to it’s sandbox-ness, letting players have free roam to destroy whatever they wanted. In Red Faction: Armageddon, the colonists have been driven away from Mars’ surface and into caves, only to discover that there’s something else down there. Watch the trailer below.

LittleBigPlanet 2 inbound?

According to a twitter post made by Electronic musician Ochre, LittleBigPlanet 2 is in development. Ochre revealed that he has a licensed a song called “Infotain Me” to Sony for LittleBigPlanet 2. Given that Sony recently purchased Media Molecule, the franchise will be PlayStation 3 exclusive.

Media Molecule recently said that a sequel would be “counter productive”. It’s strange to see a sequel in the works, especially with the success of their DLC.

Could it be a large expansion pack? Would you welcome a sequel? Do you think it’s a mistake? Let us know in the comment section.

Scribblenauts 2 announced for fall release

Posted by Kyle Gaddo On March - 8 - 2010

The latest issue of Nintendo Power reveals that a sequel to Scribblenauts is headed its way to your DS this fall.

Developer 5th Cell hinted at a sequel when they mentioned that Scribblenauts could end up on the Wii as well.

Confirmed for the sequel are 120 new and improved worlds to explore, a hint system, an improved level editor, tighter controls, and an expanded dictionary with 10,000 new words to use in the game.

Personally, I think the first game would’ve benefited greatly from tighter controls, so I hope that the sequel will deliver everything promised above and more!

Hold It! Release bump for Justice For All on Wii?!

Posted by Kyle Gaddo On February - 5 - 2010

You betcha! Phoenix Wright: Justice For All is coming to the Wii…and sooner than expected!

Before now, the game was set to have a release date in March, but thanks to a wizard and magic therein, you can now expect it in the WiiWare store this month!

Personally, I think it’s great news when games get release bumps when all you see are games getting pushed back.

Catch Justice For All in the WiiWare store for 1000 Wii Points ($10) on February 15th! Grab it especially if you missed out on the DS. The first game, Ace Attorney, is already available through the WiiWare store.

Evening Topic: Sequelitis

Evening Topic: Sequelitis

A few days ago, when I was surfing the various gaming websites out there, I came across a new word: “sequelitis”.

Sequelitis has its root in EA and Tony Hawk, who seems to insist on releasing pretty much the same game every year, with a few added extras. The same also applies to the Mario Party series, as well as Mario Kart, to a certain extent.

Yet it cannot go without mentioning that while these games have an incredibly low production time, they still manage to sell quite well. Some of them are even quite good!

- Should developers start doing what EA is doing and release games more often with less development time?

- Or is quality in proportion to development, meaning more development equal a better game?

“Mario and Sonic” 2?

Posted by Jens Erik Vaaler On January - 22 - 2009

One of Eurogamer‘s “secret sources” has told them a sequel to last year’s “Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games” is on the way. This one will feature a winter theme.

Capcom has previously been asked about “Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympics” and was quick to state “no comment”. But EuroGamer has something else to say: “a person who knows about this sort of thing has since confirmed the sequel is in the works, and will have a wintry theme.”

Considering “Mario and Sonic” was one of the best selling games in 2008 (5 million sold in 3 months), a sequel isn’t that hard to imagine.

Media Molecule already working on LittleBigPlanet sequel

Posted by Michael O'Connor On October - 27 - 2008

The game may not have even hit the shelves yet, but according to a recent report by the BBC, publishers Sony and developers Media Molecule are already hard at work on the sequel.

“Even before the game has hit the shops, the team are already at work on a sequel,” said Media Molecule boss Alex Evans.

“There’s been a lot of being in the right place at the right time. When we went to Sony we were a tiny but very experienced team. Sony had to trust in us in terms of the quality of people,” he said.

“It was amazing how much they understood what was a new concept; it was quite blue sky.”

LittleBigPlanet will hit shelves in Europe next week.
