Even the GBA SP was around for a little while before they threw the DS out there, and the PS2 slim wasn’t a Nintendo console, so I doubt Nintendo would release a new handheld, especially while DS sales are still chart-topping.
That said, the Gamecube tech thing sounds realistic to me, but only that really.

Regardless, if it’s true, I only hope it’s as easy to run homebrew on as the Wii and current DS/DSi are.

i used to have a lot of respect for edge (i picked up bayonetta because of they gave it a 10) but this is just insane. i have been playing 30 hours now and ff13 is one of the best video games i have played for a very long time. edge will be dropping a lot of readers because of this im sure.

I doubt it’s a new Burnout, because the Criterion team has been tasked by EA to make one of the bazillion new Need for Speed titles.
if EA are smart (and they have been lately, haven’t they?) they’ll make it play, look, sound and feel like Burnout, except it will say “Need for Speed” on the box.
(Of course, since NfS has licensed cars, they can’t wreck them like Burnout cars, but that’s a whole ‘nother box of tissues)

I would be surprised too, considering the badass sales their games have been getting.

Maybe it’s costing them too much to make games of that quality for only one console? If the rumor turns out to be true that is.

I think linearity is pet peeve of gamers because if they are controlling the main character of a plot they feel as if they should have some control over the outcome of the game. I do no share this however, if a game is the medium for a SPECIFIC story linearity is the proper choice. Mass Effect I think is somewhat of a mixture of the two. The series has a very linear plot that you get to control to a certain extent.

I don’t feel that sandbox games are inherently superior. As Kyle said it’s a different game experience. It was as equally fun stumbling across a major plot point when exploring in Fallout 3 as it was progressing the story in Beyond Good and Evil.

A lot of the time when I play a game, it is to immerse myself in a world. Explore the fiction, the art, the setting, the characters, etc. So naturally, I should lean towards “open” games rather than those with a strict narrative and level-design, right?

Not really.
When exploring a world in this fashion, it’s not as much where the world geometry allows me to go, as long as what I do get to experience is fully fleshed-out and realized. Games like Bioshock and Portal immediately come to mind. They are games that are strictly linear in their narrative and path, yet you can still feel the world around you, you can still explore the setting the creators have put you in.

In addition, some games that claim to be “sandbox”-titles, can in fact be sneaky impostors. Tom brought up Borderlands, a game I enjoyed immensely. Granted, you CAN go wherever you want in any given area, but if you actually want to progress your character substantially, you’ll have to follow the quest lines, which are usually 4-5 quests at any given area, go around and do them, in order to advance to the next area, and so on. Even on my second playthrough, I still went the exact same places, and did the exact same quests. Contrast this to something like Fallout 3, where you can just pick a direction, start walking, and suddenly discover something awesome most other people haven’t seen.
