At the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary panel New York Comic-Con today, Capcom fighting franchise maestro Yoshinori Ono, confirmed that cult fighting series Darkstalkers would be making a return with Darkstalkers Resurrection; a re-release of the second and third entries (Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge and Darkstalkers 3)  in the series for Xbox Live Arcade and PSN as a single pack-in title.

Catch more on this and the potential of further Darkstalkers titles, after the break.

Under development at Iron Galaxy Studios who took the coding reigns for Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online, both games will run on the rather brilliant GGPO network middleware which will allow near lagless play and will come with the usual Ranked Match/Player Match online setup which has been par for the course of Capcom re-releases.

In addition to the wonderfulness of GGPO integration, the game will also boast Replay sharing, YouTube functionality, a gallery of unlockable art items and bonuses, with the work of Udon and custom artwork by Stanley Lao included among the cool swag that you’ll be able to unlock.

As well as the usual trophies and achievements the game will also have an ‘HD filter’, which is really a polite way of Capcom telling you that they’ve upscaled the existing visual assets and artwork rather than draw new sprites and backgrounds; a shame perhaps, but the original visuals still hold a certain amount of nostalgic charm nonetheless.

Yoshinori-Ono has been eager to restart the Darkstalkers bandwagon for a while now, but has been unsure about going full-tilt on a brand new entry in the series without gauging public demand first.  Essentially, that is what the newly announced Darkstalkers Resurrection represents; a relatively low-risk re-release of the two of the series strongest entries to see the lay of the land in regards to more Darkstalkers games.

In short; if you want to see a deliciously HD rendered Darkstalkers title with all the modern trimmings, you’re going to have dig into your pockets and throw down some cash for Darkstalkers Resurrection.

You can catch the debut trailer for the double-pack below.  How many of you folks are stoked for this?

Darkstalkers Resurrection hits XBLA and PSN early in 2013 for 1200 Microsoft Points/$14.99 respectively.
