One of the best and certainly most charming surprises to spring from Sony‘s presence at Gamescom this year, was the announcement from MediaMolecule that they have a completely brand new IP in development for the Playstation Vita.

That new IP, is called ‘Tearaway‘ and just like the Little Big Planet games before it, attempts to overwhelm the player with marvelously quaint, twee aesthetics, combined with rock solid gameplay.

Indeed, as can be witnessed in the trailer below, the game looks utterly, utterly beautiful.

Casting the player as Iota, an “adventurer from another dimension”, we’re looking at all sorts of fourth-wall breakage here, as Iota is actually trapped inside the Vita handheld itself and desperately wants to free himself so he can give the player a message of great importance.

A particular highlight of the onstage demonstration that MediaMolecule’s put on showcased a 3D world, comprised entirely of paper in which scenery would fold and crease based on the player interactions with the Vita’s rear touch pad by tapping and poking’their fingers through the floor.

Not only that, but the microphone can recognise when you blow on it too; allowing you to blow enemies off of ledges and open up new areas.

Its all totally charming stuff and is yet another feather in the cap for Playstation Vita.

God knows they could do with some.

Tearaway presently has no release date.
