One of the more interesting things to come out of this year’s Quake-Con was a brand new trailer detailing the ‘lost missions’, a series of previously unreleased missions for the forthcoming Doom 3: BFG edition.
Announced a couple of months back, Doom 3: BFG edition is the original Doom 3 with all its content, brought kicking and screaming into 2012 with a better framerate, a set of levels never seen before (the titular Lost Missions no less) and Doom 1 and 2 thrown in for kicks at a budget price.
I must admit I’m quite looking forward to putting my paws on this as I’ve always had a soft spot for Doom 3. Although that said, I feel that the removal of the flash-your-light and then shoot mechanic will adversely affect the tension that the original had on PC back in 2004, given that the best scares always seemed to occur whenever you didn’t have a suitable firearm to hand.
Yeah, I know it wasn’t exactly the most intuitive of gameplay devices when viewed in a contemporary light, but it did generate a palpable sense of fear and jumpiness that might be sorely absent when Doom 3 returns to our screens later this year. Id Software wouldn’t have had to necessarily force it upon players either; some choice in the matter would have been nice.
