A lot folks were concerned and understandably so, when at E3 2012, Dead Space 3 shed its horror-tension roots for something a little more, well, blasty and uninspired.
Granted, there’s nothing terribly inspired about having a third-person horror shooter that relies on tension either, but the mere fact that very few games successfully pull it off these days, is enough of a reason to check out those games that at least try.
The newest trailer for EA‘s Dead Space 3 coming out of Gamescom then, certainly aims to re-establish the game as a horror-tension shooter rather than just an insipid Gears of War clone, liberally dressed in a Dead Space veneer.
I’ll admit, I’m a massive sucker for shooters (third person or otherwise) that ramp up the suspense and instil a sense of creeping dread like this. Its for this reason that I’m hoping that the trailer is more largely indicative of the whole game, rather than depicting smaller sections of the game which might be suffocated by generic, third-person shooter tedium.
We’ve had enough of generic, third-person shooter tedium with their announcement of Dead Space developers Visceral Games‘ other game, thank you very much.
What do you think of the trailer; is this the sort of direction you would like the whole game to follow?
Dead Space 3 is due to release in North America on PC, 360 & PS3 platforms on February 5th, 2013. European gamers get the game three days later on February 8th.
