It’s been over six years since Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been announced, making its debut in May of 2006. Kotaku recently reported that the title had quietly been cancelled, citing “sources” (but not actually sources).
Our very own Erren Van Duine, also an editor on our reputable sister site RPG Site, has gone on the record with contrary information. “Goes against information I was told quite recently, which was that Nomura is hard at work on the game and something of it will be shown at TGS,” she said on the NeoGAF forums.
I guess we’ll just wait here and twiddle our thumbs regarding the title, but personally, I hope it’s cancelled. When was the last time a game spent so long in development and came out good, right?

“but personally, I hope it’s cancelled. When was the last time a game spent so long in development and came out good, right?”
This is a silly statement. The game hasn’t been in full development for 6 years, in fact it only went into full development last year as many of the staff were busy with other projects (look at how many games Nomura has been involved in alone during that time). In fact the first trailer released years ago was literally just a tech demo, hence none of it being in real-time, it certainly hasn’t been properly in development as long as some people think it has.
That said, with six years to flesh out a story and to mess around with their Versus and Luminous engines now that it’s in full development I think we can expect something good from it, they’ve had plenty of time to come up with ideas regarding the story, characters, setting and gameplay, now that it’s gone into 100% development, as they put it, this game definitely has the potential to bring a new and interesting Final Fantasy experience, especailly after the reception the FF games of this gen have got.
@gamer873592605723645, You mean the horrible games this generation?
@Kyle Gaddo,
no good games this generation?
are you serious? Lost Odyssey was bad? Warriors Orochi 3 was bad? Tales of Graces f was bad? Infamous 1 and 2 were bad?
your too broad good sir.
@Kou The Mad, I was specifically speaking of Final Fantasy titles. Nobody could convince me that XIII and its sequel were anything but utter garbage.
Lost Odyssey was brilliant, by the way, but where ToGf was a fabulous example of combat, it floundered everywhere else.
But again, specifically FF titles.
@Kyle Gaddo,
ah, the wording confused me
they aren’t HORRIBLE, but they aren’t great either so i do see where your coming from.
@gamer873592605723645,
Finally someone with some common sense… This game hasn’t even been a full year since it entered 100% development (late summer of last year). This game was just announced far too early as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis presentation way back when, where it existed only as a rough concept, equivalent to what the new Agni’s Philosophy tech demo is now. People need to give this game a break because it has not really been in development hell at all, just announced a bit too early.
Personally, i’ll bit more than a bit bummed if this doesn’t make it to retail. If only because I get some sort of perverse pleasure out of playing long-gestating train wrecks.
In all seriousness though, I imagine we’ll hear something relatively solid at the ‘Future of Final Fantasy XIII’ presser in September.

we are done here.
@Kou The Mad, Is it terrible that part of me hopes the game gets cancelled down the line anyway? Seriously, nothing good has come out of XIII.
@Kou
Yeah, I was just about to mention that. I’m not sure what’s least surprising though; the thought that it *might* be cancelled or the idea that Kotaku continue to peddle bullshit as fact. Again.
