Tokyo Jungle had a fact sheet for Europe on Sony’s E3 show floor. It’s releasing June 7th in Japan. It’s also the best idea for a video game I’ve seen all year. But it’s getting overshadowed by the rest of E3. Let’s fix that.

In Tokyo Jungle, you play as an animal. Which kind of animal? Pretty much whatever kind you want.

In story mode, you have specific animals you must play as for set amounts of time (a Pomeranian dog and a racehorse are confirmed), but in survival mode, you get to choose from a much wider range of animals, including, but not limited to, tigers, crocodiles, beagles, hyenas, baby chickens, and tyrannosauruses. Beagles. You can also dress up your animals in clothing and hats. Since there’s no humans to place the clothing on the animals, the only explanation is that the animals have learned magic.

The plot of Tokyo Jungle is simple. It’s the near future, and humans have left Earth. Now you, an animal, must fend for yourself in a Tokyo that humans have left behind. In story mode, you must discover the secrets of the humans and why they left. Survival mode is all about stayin’ alive for as long as possible, and trying to beat the high score. You must eat, mate, and continue your legacy, and keep your lineage alive through attacks by bigger animals and scarcity of food.

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know a lot about the mechanics and strategy behind the game, since the only trailers out are all in Japanese. But I’m really excited for this game, and I pray it comes to the US. The game is PS3 exclusive, and is made by Playstation C.A.M.P. and Crispy’s. In Japan, it’s being released on disc and PSN.

I’ll leave you with around 17 minutes of gameplay that I found on Joystiq.

I agree: this is seriously one of the more original games I’ve heard in a long time. Looks fun and I’m really curious to check it out. I wish tho that the people would simply just ignore the semi-zany title and try to at least check out the videos. It’s… crazy.
