Although paying for online play is a regrettable reality for the Xbox Live platform, and Sony has been generously sweetening the proverbial pot for PS3 players in recent times with PS+, Nintendo has stated that they have no plans to make people pay for online services on the 3DS and the upcoming Wii U.

Talking during Nintendo’s annual shareholders, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata stated that while he’s not entirely adverse to the idea, he doesn’t believe that making people pay to access Nintendo’s fledging online services is in the best interests of the consumer… or the company’s bottom line.

I would be very surprised if Nintendo didn’t at least add some some of optional subscription ala PlayStation Plus, at the very least. They could probably do with the money right now, considering the company’s recent (mis)fortunes.
