Valve alpha male Gabe Newell has been toying with an idea for some time, but it finally seems that it’s coming to fruition. In regards to a pricing model for Defense of the Ancients 2 (otherwise known as Dota 2), Newell said that players will be “charged based on what they bring to the community.”

That means that being a team player and getting along with your fellow defenders may just earn you a free ride to play the title, whereas being a massive jerk will end up seeing you pay. And pay you shall, because you’ll have to give Valve your money to continue to play.

Players who help noobs, release mods and are generally an asset to the Dota 2 community may just find themselves on a tiny pedestal as they play for free, whereas trolls who exploit glitches, disregard their teammates and generally act in a jerk manner will have to pay full price for the title AND pony up some dough to even get a say regarding the game.

“So, in practice, a really likable person in our community should get Defense of the Ancients 2 for free because of past behaviour in Team Fortress 2. Now, a real jerk that annoys everyone; they can still play, but a game is full price, and they have to pay an extra hundred dollars if they want voice,” Newell told Develop.
