Matt Martin of GamesIndustry has gotten word from Sony, while discussing the upcoming NGP, that Sony has already begun work on producing their next console; a successor to the PS3.
Masaru Kato, Sony’s CFO, has this to say:
We have a portable, NGP, to be launched later this year, so we have development expenses to be incurred for this product. And for the home equipment, the PS3, this still has a product life, but this is a platform business. So for the future platform, when we will be introducing what product I cannot discuss that, but our development work is already underway and the costs are incurred there.
This goes against the statements of Sony’s CEO, Kaz Hirai, from earlier this year, where he said that the PlayStation 3 is still only halfway through Sony’s expected 10-year lifecycle, and seemed to be denying any plans on developing a new home console in the near future.
We can probable expect to hear more about this in the next couple of weeks when Sony shows off their new goodies at E3 2011.

I expect NGP to have the same effect as the PSPGo or whatever it was. Shitty.
Sony should iron out the manufacture defects on the PS3 before moving on to designing another flop. The Yellow Light of Death, according to Sony is ‘a non specific fault indicator’, that always seems to be caused by the failure of the BGA points underneath the GPU. Not to mention the Blue-Ray diodes that don’t seem to survive Sony’s updates. There are plenty more defects that I could list, because I spend all day fixing these problems. I should say, thank you Sony on behalf of all the independent repair shops around the world!
