Indie Game Tower 22

Most of us by now have heard of the success of Minecraft, The Dishwasher and other indie games created by a single developer. For a while, programmer, artist, modeller and sound guy Rick Nieuwiaat has been working on an interesting horror-inspired FPS game called Tower 22. Recently, he released a video showing off the fruits of his labour.

The video shows his first milestone of an FPS project that could be described as a crossover between Silent Hill, Resident Evil and Mirror’s Edge (not quite parkour, but the FPS exploration is reminiscent of it). Similar games exists such as the ones developed by Frictional Games (e.g. Penumbra and Amnesia), and hopefully we’ll see more games in the FPS horror genre in the future.

Some of the core highlights of the video is the use of sound and lighting to create a great feeling of isolation, yet at the same time, retain that sense of “someone is watching over you” feeling. I look forward to seeing more of this project in the future. The fact that Tower 22 is being developed by a single person makes it all the more impressive. Check out his game project blog here.
