More and more news is coming in from Tokyo Game Show, and this time we’re throwing it over to Capcom for an update on the new Devil May Cry game, simply titled DMC. Though with today’s naming conventions, it should have been titled The Devil May Cry. Alas, one cannot get everything.
DMC is being developed by Ninja Theory, the creators of Heavenly Sword and the upcoming Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. They certainly know their way around acrobatic combat if the released teaser trailer is to be believed, which you can find after the cut.
The trailer features what appears to be a younger version of Dante seemingly trapped in an asylum and fighting some demons at the same time. The CG trailer basically looks like a cross between Bayonetta and a SAW movie, being all gritty and realistic while at the same time being batshit insane.
The press release confirms that the game will be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and Capcom claims the game will “redefine the franchise”.
“Set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC will depict a duplicitous world where nothing is ever as it seems and the line between good and evil is constantly blurred. Spurred into action by the promises of a trusted relation, Dante bursts into this world intent on revenge at any cost.”
My thoughts? I honestly don’t like Dante’s new look. He looks like a goth punker gone wrong.

Being a huge fan of the Devil May Cry series ever since the release of the very first game, I am…
…
…perfectly okay with this.
It’s different. I don’t care. Ninja Theory are a stellar development company, one of the few western devs who have the same kind of handle on tight controls and game mechanics that many Japanese devs are famous for.
If anyone can successfully breed new life into the Devil May Cry franchise, these guys can.
Can’t wait.
@Michael O’Connor, Essentially, what you’re saying, is that the new DMC should play like Bayonetta.
@Kyle Gaddo, No, I’m saying I’ve played Heavenly Sword and I have enough faith in these guys to create a truly stunning spectacle fighter.
“He looks like a goth punker”
Can I be anal for five seconds? *laughs* Goth is a style that progressed out of the post punk movement. Saying that he looks like a “goth punker” is a bit like saying that a hippie looks like a “happy hippie”. They both go hand in hand!
My thoughts on this new redesign?
I love how the new redesign for Dante, an Asian looking guy who (surprisingly) isn’t a pretty boy, battered, bloody and bruised, with a style inspired by Korean post-punk fashion (example “here), is being compared to pretty-boy emo fashion and Twilight.

Yeah… sorry, I’m not seeing the correlation here.
If anything, he looks inspired by this guy:

I’m sure most of you will recognise who that is.
I really enjoyed Heavenly Sword, so this is interesting news, but I’m sort of pissed off about the whole idea of rebooting this series.
With the exception of DMC2 (which was obviously pounded out to capitalize on the interest generated by the first game), this franchise has made some really excellent refinements on its own gameplay with each installment. I mean, DMC 1, 3 and 4 all played like ~Devil May Cry games~; they were cohesive in that sense even if the overarching plot was thin.
If this reboot is meant to salvage the storyline, it’s a bit late. If it’s meant to introduce a new system of play, it really doesn’t need to be a DMC game at all.
And yet. I will play the shit out of this game and I’m sure many others will, too, so I guess. That’s exactly why. We’re getting it. Hrr.
Nice, I like that “has a case of the twilight”. ;) Not wholly convinced about this move, but Heavenly Sword was quite good (albeit SHORT). I did want to see what happened next with the old Dante and co. though. :(
@blazelion, You can thank me for that one. :T
I hope they release some Dev blogs detailing why they so heavily changed Dante’s design, aside from the fact to give it a “contemporary setting.”
@Kyle Gaddo, I still have no idea how the hell you’re connecting this with Twilight. *points to his previous post for his argument about that*
@Michael O’Connor, You can’t tell me you don’t see it.

@Kyle Gaddo, Other than them both having a serious expression? No. I’m not saying this for the hell of it, trust me. You’re going to have to point out the similarities to me.
@Michael O’Connor, I have to agree with Kyle. It’s like they interbred Tyler Durden with Edward Cullen and ended up with that …thing you call Dante up there.
Yes, Fight Club is a good film, but why do they need to rip it off in order to “reboot” Devil May Cry? Wasn’t the series doing fine on its own being over-the-top batshit insane?
@Jens Erik Vaaler, Actually, no, it wasn’t. Each game was selling significantly less than the original, and conceptually it had become unfeeling stale.
Old Dante is a relic of a time when we didn’t have the technical prowess to do more. He was too camp to ever be cool. Having grown up immersed in cultures that this new Dante is inspired by, I find him cool in a much more genuine and gritty short of way. He’s acting a bit more like a real person. Old Dante was a caricature.
And I still see no visual simularities between him and Cullen.
Old Dante was actually cool. Yes he was camp, but camp is a lot more fun than this “oooh, gritty gritty realism, yeah! More grit! More realism! More emo, more punk, more grit, please!”
It just doesn’t sit well with me.
@Jens Erik Vaaler, I think the half the problem here is graphics.
Graphics have become so high in quality that the old style of simplicity simply doesn’t work anymore. It’s really hard to transfer a character like Dante to the higher definition, what with the ability to render so much more detail.
Heck, look at Castlevania. They’re doing the exact same thing with that franchise.
@Michael O’Connor, How so? Castlevania has always been mired in gothic imagery and settings. Even the two Sorrow games, despite being set in the future, are set within HUGE gothic/ancient/dark foreboding castles. And with Lords of Shadow, it’s still set within that same tone and graphical style.
The Belmonts have always a clan of big, hulking almost Conan the Barbarian style guys who go out and slay vampires. And that’s still what we’re getting in Lords of Shadow, even if the graphics look phenomenal. A reboot doesn’t have to mean “retooling” or “reshaping”.

@Kyle Gaddo, He lost his say in the franchise they day he left.
He went and made a better game anyway. Bayonetta.
@Michael O’Connor, While I agree, it doesn’t mean he can’t shake his head in shame.
