Dante gives DMC fans the middle finger

No, really.

A quick trawl hrough the .psd file supplied on Capcom Europe’s press site reveals a number of different layers that weren’t used in the original press image – the one of Dante holding the LCPD sign and looking straight at the camera.

One of the layers is a completely new image of Dante, facing to the side of the camera while smoking something. Two other layers alter the shape of the standard image. One gives him a slightly different nose, and the other has Dante’s visible hand so that he’s giving you the finger.

Images below.

The original .psd file can be found here, if you’re interested in looking at it for yourself.

  5. Samuel Down says:

    The Japanese have some ardent fascination with British culture. That probably explains the union jack.

    that gay chief designer of ninja theory is a sick homosexual SOB !
    so he wants the design of dante to like him ya know the haircut and the overall disgusting british beggar look of the so-called dante …

  11. Rush says:

    Honestly, Dante looks like a beat up version of the dude from Twilight. No I have not seen the movies. I hear they’re saying that the reason they changed his look is because what was cool for the first 4 DMC isn’t cool now. This is not cool. This is the lamest hero ever. Honestly, I probably won’t play this game cuz I don’t wanna play a DMC as sickly emaciated looking emo kid.

  12. Tony Bradford says:

    Anything resembling vampires = Twilight

    Dante will glitter in the Sun.

    Behold, your new Twilight game.

  13. Jake says:

    Hmm. I think a dude in a long trench coat with strikingly white hair has more of a vampire feel then some guy who looks like he’s been through a load of ****.

    Not sure about the Union Flag though. That’s a little out of place…

    But i think they won’t be attracting any new fans if they stick to the original design. Some typical anime wise cracking hero archetype. They want more people to buy the game and if they change the design they’ll sell more (not alot more with this design, mind you)

    P.S. Never played or plan to play a DMC game. Not because it sucks or anything. Just haven’t had a chance to. But yeah this is an opinion based on looks.

  14. Fuzia says:

    Am I the only one liking the new Dante? This character design atleast fits his punk-ass personality!
    Don’t get me wrong, I love the original DMC and Dante, but let’s just wait and see, this game might be freaking awesome! :D

    Michael O'Connor   [ 23:24, September 23rd, 2010 ]

    @Fuzia, Nope, I love the new design as well.

    Change is not evil.

    Jens Erik Vaaler   [ 08:21, September 24th, 2010 ]

    @Michael O’Connor, YES IT IS, HOW DARE YOU SAY OTHERWISE!!!! THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS!!!

    Jake   [ 16:49, September 24th, 2010 ]

    @Fuzia, It’s no bad. I’d prefer this to the other style. He seems to have more character here (not talking about the middle finger lol)

    Anyway just remembered that the Ninja Theory designer is British, am i right? And i’m sure he said this Dante is modeled on him slightly… Explains the union flag if that’s correct.

    Michael O'Connor   [ 12:12, September 25th, 2010 ]

    @Jake, The Union Jake is a symbol of Punk, which is where the inspiration of the new design comes from.

    The suggestion that Dante is styled after Tameen is nothing more than a rumour, started because someone found a picture of him with a *barely* similiar hairstyle, put 2 + 2 together, and got 5.

    Jake   [ 13:32, September 25th, 2010 ]

    @Michael O’Connor, Ah, right. Thankyou =)

    Reem   [ 03:22, September 26th, 2010 ]

    I will accept him if Tameem did not stupidly made him looks like him, added

    the UK flag and made him point his middle finger. I think that way he humiliates

    the British ppl. Don’t say it is a symbol of punks. We (Asians) don’t have a clue

    about that, To us is it is as if he shows us that the British are proud of this kind of

    jerks and emo ppl .

    Michael O'Connor   [ 03:22, September 27th, 2010 ]

    I think the new style of the GAME will be good but what is not good is Dante’s stupid black hair with a patch, his eyes and his clothes. If the Ninja Theory know what is Dante then the shouldn’t change him but Ninja just change him without putting themselves in our places. We are like 2.7 millions of old Devil May Cry fans and I think they are gonna lose us because of Dante’s change.

  17. Vanya says:

    Not going to lie at first I was very upset with this but honestly…he looks kinda cool. And the gameplay looks awesome. GIVE IT A CHANCE PEOPLE. Honestly why are people so closed minded? Just think of it as an alternate reality LOL

  18. ISKANDAR says:

    THIS IS AN INSULT TO ALL TRUE FANS OF ORIGINAL DMC SERIES!! GET LOST WITH THOSE ‘UP-TO-DATE’ APPEARANCE DMC DONT NEED ALL THOSE IT IS ALREADY COOL THE WAY IT IS!!!

    Megan   [ 22:21, October 27th, 2010 ]

    @ISKANDAR,
    i was a upset too but i’ve come to terms with it, and its not supposed to be an up to date thing just another take to the story

    wait til the game comes out then play it THEN decide
    give it a chance and don’t knock it til you’ve tried it
    because the gameplay and fluidity looks very good

    just think of it as an alternate universe within the DMC Multi-verse

    Smeatza   [ 08:22, March 26th, 2011 ]

    @Megan
    So what you’re saying is “give them your money then decide it sucks.”
    Ninja theory have made only one decent game, and that’s only because of it’s story (Enslaved).
    There were only two things they needed to include to get full fan support – white hair and a red coat. They could have done whatever the hell they wanted outside of that and not had a trouble in the world.
    But they didn’t, they’re so concerned about getting the new casual gamer market in they decided to jump on the Twilight/emo bandwagon.
    Yeah that’s right, if you think this character is punk you are either a child or uneducated.
    This is a weak ass emo look.

    This game is going to fail massively (especially in the east). And it’s going to serve capcom right for lending it to and unexperienced, small and all in all awful developer.

    Megan   [ 22:16, October 27th, 2010 ]

    @AJO_57,
    Ninja Theory are the people that made Heavenly sword famous, and don’t think of this as DMC2
    think of it as an alternate universe
    so wait til it comes out then play it and THEN decide
    in other words…don’t knock it til you’ve tried it!

    Vince   [ 06:16, May 16th, 2011 ]

    @Megan,
    Heavenly sword is not popular though… nothing NJ made is really that successful. Capcom just handed this to the wrong people.

    Concerning the look… I do not like it, but that won’t matter. It’s supposed to be a reboot… but he needs to keep the original attitude of being cocky and having silly one liners… THAT is his personality. Taking that away will make me drop this game all together… While some of you say gameplay will be the deciding factor I say the story and character development has made Devil May Cry. 3 is probably the most popular (u do not HAVE to agree with that, but it pretty much is. It got a special edition…) and it was the most story driven really….

    All in All as of now I disapprove and feel that an important project is in armature hands

  20. Lucie says:

    Stop judging a book by its cover! Dante will still be Dante on the inside! I think the british flag looks cool and I am not saying that because I am british. Whoever said that he’s humiliating the british people, he isn’t! I don’t care if the Japanese nick our flag. If you don’t like Dante’s new appearance then hopefully the gameplay will be amazing! ;D don’t give up on the game over a flag.

    oh the series will be fine people stop whining about it

    its just going to be Ninja Theory’s take on Dante and the whole story of the Devil May cry series.

    the fluidity looks great and maybe this will be what redeems DMC2 for its failure.

    for goodness sake people there is nothing wrong with this think of it as an alternate universe that reflects the one we all know and love

    that means wait til the game is released, play it and then decide don’t knock it before you’ve tried it!

    the weapons look badass at least. =]

    the clothes look wicked(good way) =]

    so all and all it looks awesome!! :D

    the face looks cool. =]

    Vince   [ 06:20, May 16th, 2011 ]

    @Tiffany_Dmc_fan,
    It;s not the face people are complaining about. It’s the look…. Dante has ALWAYS had White hair (given this is an origin story the black hair is ok plus it is kinda white…) and the solid red trenchcoat…. He’s not a punk or scum bag. He’s a kid with an attitude …. He’s captured wrong. My opinon.

  26. synikal says:

    To those making comments gearing towards this re-design as “an insult to true DMC fans”: You are pathetic and have no right to consider yourself a supporter of DMC if that is the basis of your loyalty. Capcom has not completely washed their hands of this project. Both the US and JP branches are collectively working together with Ninja Theory. The CREATORS of the DMC series (which just happens to be one of their highly successful projects) have made the decision to bring in fresh ideas to assist in helping develop this game further. The story of DMC came from a source and guess what, it wasn’t from your own head. If it was, you’d be the one calling the shots on the history of Dante and what your vision of his past would be. That, however, is not the case. Who are you to define the story? What right do you have to trump the decision of the creator?

    Let’s pick a semi-popular piece of current literature for comparison. Yes, this is a viable comparison. The Harry Potter series sounds good, and I’m certain their fan-base is 100x more cult-like than DMC fans. People go crazy over the Harry Potter books, but if those people don’t like the direction a certain book takes they don’t go ape-shit and complain because the author “changed the whole world and it’s all falling apart and has no chance of redeeming itself OMG!”. Even if they do, they aren’t going to hammer the author and insist that it be changed. It’s just not going to happen. The fans find acceptance because it is what it is. What happens is what was meant to be. If you don’t like it, yea that kinda sucks. Life goes on.

    Laughably, some people’s comments on here are even more ‘emo’ than the new character design is being made out to seem. The design is FAR from the terminology “emo” that people are using nowadays. Off-topic, people throwing out that label as an insulting generalization for appearance is old and annoying. Emo is short for emotional, for those who haven’t picked up on that in the past oh… 5 or 6 years that the shorthand word has become popular? I’d expect such things from middle-school kids who play on MySpace. Some people have absolutely no intellectual or logical approach to the appearance and development of game characters.

    If Young Dante’s hair was white, you wouldn’t be making “emo” comments. Why? Because it’s a portion of what has become signature in his appearance. If the original Dante’s hairstyle was BLACK and was being shown for current games you’d have said “OMGZ HE’S EMO!”. Pathetic. His hair looks perfectly fine and quite frankly is something I would have expected for a younger Dante’s hair to look like. White hair, in reality, isn’t natural for people. It is for characters of most Eastern developed games though. Along with blue hair, pink hair, etc. The team is taking a more realistic and current approach to Dante’s history. Obviously, Dante’s well-known hair color is not black, it’s white. Are they saying that Dante’s hair will be black from now on, even in his adulthood? No. It’s the precursor of his development into the character he WILL become. A definitive marker that this is NOT Dante as you know him. This is the story of who he used to be, and will portray his evolution in to the character we all know and love.

    Dante’s original hairstyle pulls from a popular time when game characters who were deemed the “sexy and/or serious” were given semi-long hair and held serious look or smirk on their face (Squall [FF8], Calintz [Magna Carta], Riku [Kingdom Hearts], Snowe [Suikoden 4], Raiden [MGS2], Vyse [Skies of Arcadia] just to name a very, very few). It was over-played back then but now, years later it’s considerably unoriginal.

    Quite frankly, I’m impressed that the DMC team has held fast with so much ranting from their supposed “loyal fans”. They are taking steps to keep the freshness of the DMC series alive and for that, every one of you should be grateful. They aren’t scared of you. To a degree they should be, but they aren’t. Why? Because they gave birth to Dante. He is THEIR creation and they know damn well what path he is taking. So for all of you moronic, whining, naysayers who continue to pout about this topic in the months following: Go ahead. Boycott the game to express your undignified and pessimistic frustration. I’ll be enjoying the new DMC with the other true fans. You’ll be sorely disappointed in yourself at how you could have been so ignorant. But that’s OK, you can always pick the game up later and no one needs to know you were wrong; Capcom won’t expect an apology so you can continue being a spineless, pessimistic fool in secret.

    ” No. It’s the precursor of his development into the character he WILL become. A definitive marker that this is NOT Dante as you know him. This is the story of who he used to be, and will portray his evolution in to the character we all know and love.”

    1. this is not a precursor, it is a reboot, that means that this dante dose not grow up to be our Dante.

    “Laughably, some people’s comments on here are even more ‘emo’ than the new character design is being made out to seem”

    2. his appearance is lacking something, and that something is overwhelming confidence, hes lost that sure he may be a punk but he still has a feeling that he knows that he can lose, our Dante has never once had that feeling presented to us even in DMC2, what he was flipping coins. do you know why because that was a form of cockiness, no matter what fate had in store for him he knew that he could beat it. now a bruised face and tarted clothes don’t emulate that to well don’t you think?

    “If Young Dante’s hair was white, you wouldn’t be making “emo” comments. Why? Because it’s a portion of what has become signature in his appearance. 3. lets take you harry potter theory out for a spin shall we. lets say harry potters reboot is going to come out after all these years. not we all know that harry was a boy who was destined for great things. Now he is a nice boy in the original series, always helpful never scornful. now lets take the reboot and make harry a 17 yr old boy, who live in New York city, give him some western angst, about his parents murder, and subsequent slavery by his Guardian, and now give him power to exact his magical revenge on he who shall not be named. next hell meet with different magical gangs to recruit, like the Weasley family, corrupted officials, and the gryffindor mafia, for his final battle. how many Fans do you think would like this, im no fan but this seam a little more that just than a reboot, yes. more like a whole other story, same goes here here, especial that whole trailer. also FYI young Dante’s hair was white as seen in the DMC manga released for DMC3, i thought all the fans have seen it.

    “Quite frankly, I’m impressed that the DMC team has held fast with so much ranting from their supposed “loyal fans”. P.S
    i want to try out the new game but at the same time i have issues with it, as long as i can play as the Real Dante in after this and his story i wouldn’t mind this as a side story. and please be nice.

    synikal   [ 23:02, April 7th, 2012 ]

    @Emet,
    “1. this is not a precursor, it is a reboot, that means that this dante dose not grow up to be our Dante.”

    -You’re right and wrong. He grows up to be the same Dante. This still allowed for Capcom to set the back story without ‘tainting’ the original.

    “his appearance is lacking something, and that something is overwhelming confidence, hes lost that sure he may be a punk but he still has a feeling that he knows that he can lose, our Dante has never once had that feeling presented to us even in DMC2, what he was flipping coins. do you know why because that was a form of cockiness, no matter what fate had in store for him he knew that he could beat it. now a bruised face and tarted clothes don’t emulate that to well don’t you think?”

    Because a bruised face and tattered clothes means he lost and was gang-banged in a back alley right? Most logical people would view that as someone with a fighting spirit who doesn’t know when to quit.

    “lets take you harry potter theory out for a spin shall we. lets say harry potters reboot is going to come out after all these years. not we all know that harry was a boy who was destined for great things. Now he is a nice boy in the original series, always helpful never scornful. now lets take the reboot and make harry a 17 yr old boy, who live in New York city, give him some western angst, about his parents murder, and subsequent slavery by his Guardian, and now give him power to exact his magical revenge on he who shall not be named. next hell meet with different magical gangs to recruit, like the Weasley family, corrupted officials, and the gryffindor mafia, for his final battle. how many Fans do you think would like this, im no fan but this seam a little more that just than a reboot, yes. more like a whole other story, same goes here here, especial that whole trailer. also FYI young Dante’s hair was white as seen in the DMC manga released for DMC3, i thought all the fans have seen it.”

    If you’re going to quote things out of context, at least respond to it properly. Concerning your (incredibly overblown and over proportioned) Harry Potter reboot scenario: lol, seriously? A haircut and color equates to all that. Wow. Oh, and please note: Superman is getting a divorce with Lois Lane. That’s the real crime. Hidden stabs like “I thought all the fans have seen it” are useless. If you were half as informed with comics as you are with Harry Potter, you’d know that anything can change at any time. A character’s hair can go from black to white, permanently, in any given moment, and they’d feed some logical explanation for it.

    “lest not forget what really make a game, sale. with out us their would not be a series, why because it not profitable. they would have stopped at number one if we didn’t enjoy it. yes they do control his path but we are the ones that make set it, with our money”

    A company bending to every person’s complaint does not sell games; not when it comes to a game with a set story and semi-linear gameplay. Why? Because THAT’S not profitable. They’d waste more money developing and altering the game until everyone was happy (which wouldn’t happen). Your money only goes so far. It’s not like DMC consumers were the only ones providing the funds for that project. Don’t be so narrow-minded, Capcom has plenty of sources for income.

    “very rude, of you to down other opinions, almost fascist of you. but according to this it seam that you would play anthing that Capcom says is devil may cry”

    I curious if you even know what fascism implies. I’m not here to be “buddy-ole-pals” with people, and quite frankly I can be as rude as I want when people speak from their asses instead of their heads. Now if you’re going to quote something out, again, at least respond to it with something more than calling me a “fascist”. People scream ‘Boycott!’ to express a pessimistic view (which is/was undignified). And that’s fine, it’s their right and it’s on them. Those people never get the game, the game is released anyway, and they suddenly find that it’s nowhere near what they expected and ranted about to all their friends. So they go out and buy the game anyway, because all their friends are talking about how well they worked in the story; completely hypocritical of their previous rants before (spineless). So yes, Emet, I will be as rude as I want to small-minded tools that follow the masses screaming “vive la revolution!” every time a game company tries to make progress and does something different with THEIR product. There’s a difference between being slightly skeptical and acting like the entire world is falling apart because of hair.

    “i want to try out the new game but at the same time i have issues with it, as long as i can play as the Real Dante in after this and his story i wouldn’t mind this as a side story. and please be nice.”

    What was it you said? Oh, yes.

    @synikal,
    I agree with you, I am waiting to play the game before I have an opinion about it—and I’m also glad the devs are staying the course, your arguments about Dante’s looks are valid especially considering that is where most of the dissatisfaction is coming from. I like the darker approach, I see it as a comparison between Tim Burton’s Batman & Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight, Tim’s was fun for it’s time but it’s dated—& what would you expect from a child who saw his parents gunned down for really nothing when you’ve got heaps of money to begin with?

    Some people keep saying this is a reboot & has nothing to do with the original, I found nothing to support this, in fact, heard the opposite while watching the devs trailers—when I ask people who say this for a link to their source, of course there isn’t one. I want to see how Dante’s story goes, what would you expect from a child who’s been chained up in an asylum, fed mind-altering drugs, obviously getting his ass kicked on a daily basis, all the while because he’s seeing the real demons that no one else can? Chuckie Cheese pizza & strawberry sundaes? I don’t think so—that might come with the cockiness of some age & experience but not at the beginning.

    Don’t get me wrong, DMC is one of my favourite games. I’ve played them to death so I consider myself a fan & I love Dante for all his silliness (& sarcasm in the anime & manga) I just understand the need for a change or an updating of an old story that, had it been left to follow it’s predecessors, would have no doubt gotten the old, “it’s the same thing, this shit’s getting old” argument. Can’t please everybody. According to NT & Capcom they’ve kept the game’s fighting mechanics, so it won’t be that—some people talking about framerates, well, again I’ve tried to find out about that & can’t—I do know that the cutscenes in DMC 4 were dropped to a 30fps on the PS3, so if you were watching cutscene trailers of that, it wouldn’t be looking the same either.

    The petition is silly whoever put that up…I actually hope that this one is the best of the whole series, I really do. And the more I see of the new Dante and the more hating I hear, the more stoked it’s making me, so Capcom, release the damn game already, I want to play!!

    It’s not Dante who’s showing us the middle finger, it’s Capcom!
