[UPDATE]: It turns out the clip was, in fact, neither a game trailer, nor a film trailer. According to actress Jeri Ryan’s Twitter account, the clip was made by director Kevin Tancharoen to sell his vision to Warner Bros. Jeri said she did her role as a favor for a friend. Still doesn’t make the clip any less awesome. Dear WB: pick this sucker up! Or else…

The earliest reports came from Kotaku, but the Twitter stream has been steadily pumping out news and rumours about the mysterious video that appeared on YouTube. The clip appears to be a trailer for an upcoming movie adaptation of the Mortal Kombat series, offering a more realistic take on the franchise.

Starring Michael Jai White as Jax and Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, the clip looks like a Nolanised Mortal Kombat universe, which comes off as much darker and more violent than the campness of the original adaptation. According to Kotaku, Warner Bros. wants to reboot the movie franchise, and if this clip is a teaser trailer for the movie, sign me up.

More will most likely be revealed at E3, considering the clip’s reveal this week. Keep in mind that this clip might have been released just to make a stir about an upcoming Mortal Kombat game.

@Michael O’Connor, So what do you think it is?

@Jens Erik Vaaler No damn idea, but whatever it is, it’s bloody awesome.

Damn you, you just used the word “Nolanised”, and I didn’t even have to think twice to know what you meant. <.<

@Herman S. Lilleng, That’s ’cause we’re nerds! And it really doesn’t take a genius to figure out what “Nolanised” means unless they’ve been living in a cave for X amount of years.

For those who want a glimpse of Sub Zero’s face.

@tycondrius, I was wondering what he’d look like. That’s pretty creepy.

By the by, Kevin Tancharoen is indeed the brother of Maurissa Tancharoen, who at least one guy here will recognize. For those who don’t, she worked on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog, together with her boyfriend Jed Whedon, and his brother Joss.

Everything good in the geekosphere is coming up Whedon!

@Herman S. Lilleng, That guy is me isn’t it? Isn’t it?! She also did 17 episodes of Whedon’s Dollhouse.
There’s a lot of talent in that family. I hope the Mortal Kombat film goes through so we can see Kevin’s directorial talent

@Jens Erik Vaaler, How’d you guess? :o Btw, if you want to see his talent, you can watch the… eh.. the Fame remake. <.<

Though if this wasn't enough proof that he's a geek, he explains in this Collider interview how dorky he is, and how he kinda ended up in music video directing. :p http://www.collider.com/2010/06/09/kevin-tancharoen-interview-mortal-kombat-rebirth-feature-film/

@Herman S. Lilleng, I’d rather not watch the Fame remake, though it’s good to see he’s a pretty big geek. Then again, aren’t most parts of the extended Whedon family? :p
