3DS may not actually be called 3DS

Satoru Iwata said “Nintendo 3DS” was not the official name of Nintendo’s new DS hardware. Yet it seems his words have come back to bite him in the arse.

Nintendo has registered Nintendo 3DS, N3DS as well as 3DSPlay and 3DSWare. The latter is obviously the 3DS equivalent to DSiWare, but what could 3DSPlay mean?

Along with the above mentioned filings, Nintendo also trademarked DS Sound, DS Name Card, Ds Magazine, DSMovie, DSCamera, DSCinema, DSMessage, DSMusic and DSAlbum. According to Siliconera these could be simple services, but are most likely protective trademarks.

So 3DS it is, I guess. More news ’round E3.
