Wall of Text: Thoughts on Red Dead Redemption’s problems

Posted by Joe Pomerening On May - 31 - 2010

Recently, I wrote two articles about Red Dead Redemption. Particularly, regarding the large amounts of bugs and glitches found in the game. Those articles can be viewed here and here.

Keep in mind that the following rants do not represent the opinions of the rest of The Gaming Vault staff. This is entirely my opinion on a recent event in gaming politics. Obviously, my opinion is of the minority. It is for this very reason, that I feel it should be spoken even louder.

Looking through the comments of the recent Red Dead Redemption articles I wrote, I saw a lot of interesting points made in the comments sections, some of which I’d like to address publicly, because I feel that this is an important subject as a gamer.

Activision reveals story for next Guitar Hero, seems strangely familiar

Posted by Herman S. Lilleng On May - 30 - 2010

…hey, wait a minute!

The latest issue of Nintendo Power is apparently set to reveal Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, which will go back to more “shredding” rock and roll, after the broad appeal of the latest GH games. The biggest news, however, is about the games’ story mode.

The story will be narrated by Gene Simmons, of Kiss fame. Quoting Kotaku on the synopsis:

“The Beast defeats the demigod of rock and the demigod of rock is entombed in stone and his legendary guitar is banished,” Bright said. “[The guitar] is the source of his power. And so you are going through and assembling an army of warriors to be able to defeat the beast. Along the way, you’ll have to recover the legendary guitar…”

Wow. I, uhm… Wow.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the desert…

Posted by Joe Pomerening On May - 29 - 2010

Rockstar’s latest hit, Red Dead Redemption, has brought us plenty of laughs, as we mentioned in an earlier post where we met out dearest friend, the Donkey Lady.

Turns out that we’ve got plenty more laughs to look forward to. We’ve got another video featuring horses gone bad, and some screenshots of what appears to be a genuine Easter Egg, and not a glitch.

Pokémon Black and White release dates and legendaries announced

Posted by Jens Erik Vaaler On May - 28 - 2010

Several of us here at The Gaming Vault are huge Pokémon fan, even if a few of us agree that the sheer number of catchable Pokémon in each new game is a little rediculous.

But we’re still pretty psyched about Pokémon Black and White, which promises improved 3D graphics and a new dynamic battle system. In today’s Pokémon news reveals not only the release date for Black and White, but also the games’ respective legendaries.

Nintendo of America has officially given Pokémon Black and White a North American/European release date of “spring 2011″. The new legendaries are called Reshiram and Zekrom, which was confirmed on the official Pokémon website. Nothing on types, but Psychich and Dark are probably safe bets.

Is it just me or do they look a bit brutal? Check them out after the cut.

What to do with 44 million gaming credentials?

Posted by Jassim Happa On May - 28 - 2010

Most people online are familiar with concepts such as malware; programs that aim to do something malicious, whether it’d be a trojan, spyware, worm or a virus that manipulates data on your hard drive. On the online gaming scene, not so unexpectedly, there is an increasing trend to steal passwords and game credentials in order to resell them.

Symantec recently published a blog post about an alarming amount of stolen credentials that is worth a read. Imagine yourself being the bad guy: you have the credentials, but in order to sell them, you need to determine the game credential’s value.

That will take quite some time to do with all this data. Logging into 44 million times might be painful in its own rights (whether you do it automatically by writing a program that does this for you, or manually), but this is a clear indicator that this isn’t feasible.. even for the thieves.

Check it out here.

Rumour: Michel Ancel leaves Ubisoft Montpellier

Posted by Jens Erik Vaaler On May - 28 - 2010

Warning, warning! Danger Will Robinson, Danger!

Nothing is official yet, but according to a source at French videogame site Woot Gaming, the creator of Beyond Good and Evil, Michel Ancel, has gone up and left Ubisoft Montpellier. Ancel is joined by “another well-known developer”, who’s name was undisclosed, to form a new studio.

The source at Woot Gaming cited internal problems during the development of Beyond Good and Evil 2, a game many still believe is caught in development hell. This could unfortunately mean that development on BGaE2 is paused, if not cancelled outright.

Keep in mind that this is still a rumour, so don’t go crying about on Twitter and Facebook just yet. An official statement will most likely follow in the coming weeks. Still. God damn you, Ubisoft! Why did you have to end Beyond Good and Evil on a cliffhanger, without knowing if you were going to pursue a sequel! Now we’ll never know the whole story! Damnit!

Final Fantasy: The Four Heroes of Light Announced for the West

Square Enix have announced that they’ll be releasing Final Fantasy: The Four Heroes of Light in the West this Fall/Autumn in Europe, with a US confirmation to follow later today.

The DS spin-off has had a slight name change for the localization, as it was released in Japan as Final Fantasy Gaiden: Four Warriors of Light.

The title is a back-to-basics Final Fantasy title, with a turn-based battle system, four heroes, crystals and kingdoms. It’s designed to harken back to the NES Final Fantasy titles.

The game’s likely to be at E3 so we’ll bring you our thoughts and impressions from the show. Stick with us for the latest on Final Fantasy: The Four Heroes of Light.

High resolution Marvel vs. Capcom 3 screenshots

The Capcom Unity blog has given us some of the high resolution versions of the previously leaked Game Informer images, as well as some brand new ones.

The game’s producer, Ryota Niitsuma also commented on the pictures, explaining how they are going for a very comic-booky look, as well as bringing back some of the over-the-top attacks from the previous games with a more, *ahem*, “realistic” look. Have a look-see for yourself in the gallery below!

Mad Catz FightPad Review

Posted by Alex Donaldson On May - 27 - 2010

Before taking a look at the Mad Catz FightStick Tournament Edition S, I was lucky enough to also try out the middle-ground between a normal controller and a stick: The Mad Catz FightPad.

In their quest for dominance of the fighting game controller market, Mad Catz have taken most of the features from the FightPad from the controller that has historically arguably had the best fighting game performance – the Sega Saturn.

Mad Catz FightStick Tournament Edition S Review

Posted by Alex Donaldson On May - 26 - 2010

Street Fighter IV single-handedly revived the fighting genre for me, and I’ve been spending a pretty great deal of time trying to get better at the game. When Super Street Fighter IV arrived I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to review the gold standard for hardcore fighting fans everywhere – the Mad Catz Tournament Edition FightStick.

The FightStick I got my hands on was the Super Street Fighter IV branded Tournament Edition S, which takes all the best things about the original Street Fighter IV TE FightStick and crams them into a smaller, more compact case – thus the S in the name.

There’s not much information available at the moment, but it has been rumoured on VG247 that Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are heading to PS3

New Splatterhouse Game Slated for Halloween Release

Posted by Jennifer Sneed On May - 26 - 2010

Halloween is my favorite holiday. What better way to celebrate it than with the release of Splatterhouse 3 for PS3 and XBox 360?

Namco Bandai has confirmed a Halloween release for this platforming, puzzle-solving, bloodfest of a game. Although the exact release date is not mentioned, Halloween falls on a Sunday this year, so I’d expect it to be a tad earlier.

Get ready for a brutal gorefest when Splatterhouse reaches store shelves this Halloween…and don’t forget your mask!

Have Yoshi, Will Travel

Posted by Kyle Gaddo On May - 25 - 2010

Well, that was fast. Like, REALLY fast. There’s already a glitch out for Super Mario Galaxy 2 that allows you to pretty much go anywhere you want while riding Yoshi.

The trick comes to us via MAST3RLINKX1, a YouTube user, and he’s posted a video online detailing the trick itself and how to execute it.

Video and instructions after the cut.

Allard and Bach leave Microsoft

Posted by Jens Erik Vaaler On May - 25 - 2010

Microsoft is currently undergoing a “massive shakeup” in their Entertainment & Devices Devision, resulting in the departure of president Robbie Bach.

According to Kotaku, J. Allard, one of the “top men behind the Xbox and Xbox 360″, is also leaving Microsoft alongside Bach. Bach has been working with Microsoft for 22 years, and is retiring from the company to spend more time with his family, and devote time to non-profit organisations. Allard will remain on in an advisory role.

Bach, Allard and Ed Fries were instrumental in bringing Microsoft into the videogame business. Back and Allard were the ones to introduce the Xbox 360 to the general gaming public at E3 2005.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will stay in his position. Don Mattrick, who leads Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business, and Andy Lees, who leads Microsoft’s mobile communications business will report directly to Ballmer starting July.
