If you were planning to upgrade from a DSi to a DSi XL and haven’t done so already, you may want to rethink your purchase as downloadable content lovers will not be able to transfer the DSiWare on the original DSi to the new DSi XL.

You’ll have to buy your DSiWare. Again.

A Nintendo spokesperson told Kotaku that the company was “looking into that specific topic,” but as of right now there isn’t anything to announce.

GoNintendo has an excellent review of the new DSi XL on the site, so I’d suggest going to check it out if you’re planning on picking one up.

I’d say this is a pretty poor move on Nintendo’s part, especially when such an option to have your downloaded content move from platform to platform has been widely available through Xbox Live and PSN.

    It’s for this very reason that I avoided the DSi. I upgraded my old phat DS to a DS Lite just a few months ago (DSi had already been out for a while). I grabbed a Lite instead of a DSi because I knew something like this would happen. Without the option to remotely backup or transfer the purchased DLC, then it simply isn’t worth the risk.

    @Joe Pomerening,

    I’m pretty bummed about this whole prospect. I’m personally loving my DS Lite right now, and I don’t plan to upgrade to a DSi/XL any time soon. Having the GameBoy Advance slot makes my DS Lite worth having, especially since I’m an avid Pokémon player.

    They did away with the R4DS compatibility for the DSi, mind you, but it’s not something I use. I play my Nintendo games legit. B)

    Anyway, yeah, Nintendo are pretty much shooting themselves in the foot with this, but it’s a good thing that they’re a world-class runner with three legs.

    @Kyle Gaddo, AceKard works with DSi, from what I recall.
