Norwegian developer Funcom, whom we reported on yesterday, has some more news about their upcoming MMO The Secret World. The company is currently in Seattle for Penny Arcade Expo, showing off the game behind closed doors. This is the first time the game will be seen by anyone outside of Funcom.

“We’ve taken inspiration from history books, mythologies, urban legends and pop culture, mixing it all into an exciting universe. Development began almost seven years ago, but the in-game story stretches back literally millions of years,” said creative director Ragnar Tørnquist in an interview with Norweigan newspaper Dagbladet.

In The Secret World, players will have to take a stand from the very beginning, joining one of three secret societies: Templars, Illuminati or Dragons. The game will shape itself according to your choices. The Illuminati are cold opportunists, Templars are more sophisticated and tactful, and the Dragons have a spiritual and philosophical approach to the challenges they face.

Tørnquist promises their universe will not be completely black and white, and that there will be a large number of “bad apples”, groups employing questionable methods. In the interview he emphasises the fact that all the secret societies want to fight the evil threatening our world, but that they each have their own ways of doing it.

The newspaper also managed to snag the newest teaser trailer from the game, which can be viewed through this. Just hit the giant banner with the white haired girl at the top of the page and enjoy.

The official website has a personality quiz that rates your suitability to each society. Completing the quiz can award you with free access to the game’s beta test, as well as exclusive items once the game rolls around. I became a Dragon, and I am psyched for how this game is going to turn out.
