- Square Enix details Front Mission Evolved gameplay
Many people have been apprehensive about Square Enix’s decision to make the latest instalment of the Front Mission franchise a third person action game, instead of following the title’s tradition strategy roots. Square Enix though, are confident that they have chosen the right developer for the job with Double Helix.
Speaking to our man Alex Donaldson at this year’s E3, Square Enix revealed that Double Helix was intentionally chosen from a selection of 10 different developers to work on this new approach to the franchise.
“We spoke to probably about ten [developers] and press some offers to see who will be the best, and they supplied games they had already created and also the prototype that Double Helix had built for us, so we thought they would be the best,” Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto explained.
“Through the history of Front Mission it has spread across a variety of genres – for example it has been an action game and an RTS before, so for one of the games we wanted to send out to the global market, a third person shooter seemed to be a good option for us.”
“From our perspective, Silent Hill [Homecoming] was a really successful project for us,” development director Jeremy Lee added, “The projects are very different, but we created a lot of storyline to try and expand on the events of Silent Hill, and now we are doing it with Front Mission – with our collaboration, its not really an expansion of Front Mission, it is really a new chapter to the story.”
“The game is set out not so much to be a western interpretation of the Front Mission universe, what we are trying to do is make something that’s a collaboration – not eastern not western. Something from both of our cultures that the world wide audience will love.”
Look out for our complete interview with Square Enix and Double Helix this Monday, July 6th.

You know this really seems just like another strategy from Square Enix to me that milks out every possible dime out of their franchises. And you know how they do that… put every game on the 360 and if needed change it to their demographic. Thus the third-person shooter was born.
How many 360 gamers seriously know about the Front Mission series enough to enjoy its RTS style gameplay. To me this is going to go just like the late half of the Armored Ccore games and Gunhounds (or whatever the hell that mech game was called).

@yJinYo,
“put every game on the 360 and if needed change it to their demographic.”
This is also coming out on the PS3 and PC.
Personally I think they’re just testing the waters with this. Its intended more to be a spin-off then a direct sequel, hence the lack of a number in the name.
Who knows, maybe if this sells well we could see a full blown strategy game sequel on next generation consoles. How cool would that be?

Ah gad this is horrible! Why would they do this! FM was such an amazing series. FM4 was one of the best PS2 games, it just didn’t sell that well. Next thing you know, the one after this is going to be a party game.
